Candidates contesting Municipal By-Elections on 5 February 2020

Three municipal ward by-elections will take place in the Eastern and Northern Cape provinces tomorrow, 5 February 2020.

The by-elections will be contested by two (2) independent candidates and eight (8) candidates from four (4) political parties.  

In the Eastern Cape:

• Ward 55 in Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality – NMA will be contested by five(5) candidates, namely, Noxolo Alicia Mafumana, an independent candidate, Ntombizodwa Nyati of the African National Congress (ANC), Fundiswa Constance Cacela of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), Nobuhle Jacobs of the Socialist Revolutionary Workers Party (SRWP), and Nomakaya Ntozini of the United Democratic Movement (UDM). 

The ward was previously represented by the ANC and the ward seat became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 57.11% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 74.91% of valid votes.

In the Northern Cape:

• Ward 01 in Phokwane Municipality – NC094 will be contested by two (2) candidates, namely, Ndoisele Richard Nxamashe of the ANC and Motlhabane Soul Moremi of the EFF.

The ward was previously represented by the ANC and the ward seat became vacant as a result of the councillor’s membership being terminated from the party. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 56.83% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 71.61% of valid votes.

• Ward 07 in Phokwane Municipality – NC094 will be contested by three (3) candidates, namely, Mzwandile Thethani, an independent candidate, Remaketse Portia Selogilwe of the ANC and Marvin Thabonyana Van Wyk of the EFF.

The ward was previously represented by the ANC and the ward seat became vacant as a result of the councillor’s membership being terminated from the party.  The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 58.08% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 72.20% of valid votes.
