Northern Cape by-elections postponed following high court ruling

The Gauteng High Court (South Division) has interdicted by-elections in ward 1 and ward 7 in the Phokwane Municipality (NC094). The by elections were scheduled to take place today following the expulsion by the African National Congress (ANC) of two councillors in October 2019.

The court granted the interdict halting the by-elections following a successful challenge by the two councillors. The court yesterday suspended the expulsion of the councillors until the finalisation of their appeal to the African National Congress Disciplinary Committee and further reinstated Mr Crocket Adams and Mr Kgomotsego Mokale as councillors in the Municipal Council.

The Electoral Commission was cited as a respondent in the matter but chose to abide by the court ruling.

Contestants in the by-elections have been informed during the Municipal Party Liaison Committee meeting that was convened earlier today. The Electoral Commission will maintain presence at voting stations to advise voters who arrive to vote of the postponement. Political parties and the independent candidate have also offered to communicate the message of the postponement in the affected wards.

Today’s by-election ward 55 in Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality in the Eastern Cape continues as scheduled.
