Results of the Municipal By-Elections held on 28 August 2019

During the by-elections contested yesterday in the Free State, ten (10) independent candidates won seats from the African National Congress (ANC) and the ANC retained five (5) seats gained in the 2016 Municipal Elections. 

The ten (10) new independent councillors are:

• Matrshidiso Augustina Mofokeng Tsoeu in Ward 07 in the Maluti A Phofung Municipality – FS194. The candidate gained the seat from the ANC who won it in the 2016 Municipal Elections. The total votes cast was 49.85% compared to 72.71% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 48.21%.
• Mojalefa Ishmael Naledi in Ward 10 in the Maluti A Phofung Municipality – FS194. The candidate gained the seat from the ANC who won it in the 2016 Municipal Elections. The total votes cast was 55.07% compared to 72.78% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 50.86%.
• Joseph Rantsane in Ward 11 in the Maluti A Phofung Municipality – FS194. The candidate gained the seat from the ANC who won it in the 2016 Municipal Elections. The total votes cast was 65.75% compared to 77.02% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 48.80%.
• Isaak Nare Ramohloki in Ward 20 in the Maluti A Phofung Municipality – FS194. The candidate gained the seat from the ANC who won it in the 2016 Municipal Elections. The total votes cast was 45.08% compared to 78.81% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 45.46%.
• Diphapang Elias Sefatsa in Ward 23 in the Maluti A Phofung Municipality – FS194. The candidate gained the seat from the ANC who won it in the 2016 Municipal Elections. The total votes cast was 52.49% compared to 78.96% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 47.03%.
• Shashapa Joshua Motaung in Ward 24 in the Maluti A Phofung Municipality – FS194. The candidate gained the seat from the ANC who won it in the 2016 Municipal Elections. The total votes cast was 36.27% compared to 70.40% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 44.57%.
• Nqhae Raphael Mokoena in Ward 26 in the Maluti A Phofung Municipality – FS194. The candidate gained the seat from the ANC who won it in the 2016 Municipal Elections. The total votes cast was 50.25% compared to 75.12% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 45.48%.
• Mafole John Ralethohlane in Ward 29 in the Maluti A Phofung Municipality – FS194. The candidate gained the seat from the ANC who won it in the 2016 Municipal Elections. The total votes cast was 49.00% compared to 68.80% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 37.87%.
• Tjopo Gilbert Mokotso in Ward 31 in the Maluti A Phofung Municipality – FS194. The candidate gained the seat from the ANC who won it in the 2016 Municipal Elections. The total votes cast was 54.17% compared to 69.48% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 49.50%.
• Teboho Rymond Mohlekwa in Ward 34 in the Maluti A Phofung Municipality – FS194. The candidate gained the seat from the ANC who won it in the 2016 Municipal Elections. The total votes cast was 68.14% compared to 45.37% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 40.09%.

The five (5) new ANC councillors are

• Mandlenkosi Wiseman Dlamini in Ward 01 in the Maluti A Phofung Municipality – FS194. The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, with 62.88% of the votes cast compared to 81.55% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 39.70%.
• Tobatsi David Moloi in Ward 08 in the Maluti A Phofung Municipality – FS194. The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, with 43.94% of the votes cast compared to 68.37% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 50.24%.
• Thabo Zachia Macholo in Ward 15 in the Maluti A Phofung Municipality – FS194. The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, with 40.56% of the votes cast compared to 75.24% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 48.08%.
• Mokete Petrus Moahi in Ward 16 in the Maluti A Phofung Municipality – FS194. The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, with 46.30% of the votes cast compared to 65.10% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 46.67%.
• Lerato Bernard Sesoai in Ward 18 in the Maluti A Phofung Municipality – FS194. The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, with 47.98% of the votes cast compared to 65.87% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 51.19%.
