In the by-elections held on Wednesday, 21 January 2026, in Gauteng and the Western Cape, the Democratic Alliance (DA) retained its seat in Gauteng while the Patriotic Alliance (PA) won seats in the Western Cape.

The IEC will hold the first by-elections of 2026 when 12 candidates from five political parties contest by-elections set to take place in Gauteng and the Western Cape on 21 January 2026. In 2025 the Commission ran 29 by-elections with at least two by-elections every month of the year.

The Municipal Demarcation Board (MDB) hands over Final Wards to the Electoral Commission in Preparation for the 2026-27 Local Government Elections

The Municipal Demarcation Board (MDB) has handed over the revised wards to the Electoral Commission of South Africa, following a successful ward delimitation process on 10 December 2025. The Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA), Velenkosini Hlabisa, delivered the keynote address on this occasion. This handover paves the way for the Electoral Commission (IEC) to commence with the review of voting districts to ensure that they are aligned with the revised wards.

Electoral Commission Publishes Quarter Two Political Funding Disclosure Report – 2025-26 FY

This Quarter 2 Disclosure Report which covers the period from July until September 2025 provides an overview of donations declared by political parties to the Electoral Commission in terms of section 9 (1) the Political Funding Act No 6 of 2018. The report indicates continued donation and fundraising activities involving both monetary and in-kind contributions. Four political parties made financial disclosures.
