In by-elections held on Wednesday, 10 December 2025, in Gauteng and the Western Cape, the African National Congress (ANC) retained their seats in both provinces.

Wednesday, 10 December 2025

The Municipal Demarcation Board (MDB) has handed over the revised wards to the Electoral Commission of South Africa, following a successful ward delimitation process on 10 December 2025. The Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA), Velenkosini Hlabisa, delivered the keynote address on this occasion. This handover paves the way for the Electoral Commission (IEC) to commence with the review of voting districts to ensure that they are aligned with the revised wards.

This Quarter 2 Disclosure Report which covers the period from July until September 2025 provides an overview of donations declared by political parties to the Electoral Commission in terms of section 9 (1) the Political Funding Act No 6 of 2018. The report indicates continued donation and fundraising activities involving both monetary and in-kind contributions. Four political parties made financial disclosures.

The Electoral Commission has officially commenced its Outreach Training of Trainers programme in Umhlanga, KwaZulu-Natal, on 26 November 2025, marking a major milestone in preparations to welcome 834 Municipal Outreach Coordinators (MOCs) in January 2026.

Thirty-three candidates representing 11 political parties, along with one independent candidate, will contest the by-elections scheduled for 26 November 2025 in the Eastern Cape, Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and the Northern Cape.
