the date of the 2024 general elections was proclaimed by the President and all
the provincial Premiers on Friday, 23 February 2024. The proclamation of the
election date has certain legal consequences for the electoral process.

The Electoral Commission has
published the seat determination for provincial legislatures ahead of the 2024
National and Provincial Elections (NPE).
In the by-elections contested on 14 February 2024 in the Free State, Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, North West and the Western Cape provinces, the African National Congress (ANC) retained its two seats and lost a seat in another municipality. The Democratic Alliance (DA) also retained two seats and lost a seat in another municipality. The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) retained a seat and also won a seat. The Patriotic Alliance (PA) won a seat in the Western Cape.

Within five hours of the registration process getting under way across the network of 23 303 voting stations nationwide, the Electoral Commission reports a seamless start, with over 99% of stations operational within minutes of the commencement time of 08h00.

The Electoral Commission will hold a second voter registration weekend
on 3 and 4 February 2024 in preparation for the general elections of the National
Assembly and Provincial Legislatures. Accordingly, the Electoral Commission
announces its readiness to welcome eligible South Africans at 23 303
registration stations across the country to register or check their details
ahead of the elections.
