Vote at another voting station notice (Section 24A)

Everything you need to know about to Vote at another voting station notice (Section 24A)

Share this page:

What is a Section 24A vote?

A voter may vote outside of the voting district where registered on voting day, 29 May 2024, but needs to notify the Electoral Commission before voting day during the period specified in the Election Timetable. That period for the 2024 elections is 15 March 2024 to 17 May 2024.

What should I do if I am not going to be in my voting district on voting day?

If you are outside of the voting district where you are registered on voting day, 29 May 2024, you must notify the Electoral Commission by completing an online Section 24A form to inform us in which voting district you would like to vote on voting day. By capturing the address where you will be, the system will identify the relevant voting district. Remember to share this link with family and friends who may be travelling on Election Day too.

By law, all South African residents must register to vote where they reside, and vote where they are registered. However, in terms of the new Electoral Amendment Act, Section 24A, a voter may vote outside of their voting district in-country, but ONLY if they notified the Electoral Commission (IEC) in advance during the timeframe specified in the Election Timetable, that is, by Friday, 17 May 2024, 23:59, indicating at which voting district they intend to vote.

When should I complete the Section 24A online form?

By law, the notification period opens on 15 March 2024 and closes on 17 May 2024 at 23:59.

How many ballots will be issued to me when I undertake a Section 24A vote?

If you vote inside the province where you are registered, you will receive three (3) ballot papers. These are the National, Regional and Provincial ballot papers.

If you vote outside the province where you are registered, you will receive the National ballot paper only.

What if I miss the Section 24A notification period, and need to travel outside my voting district on 29 May 2024. Will I be denied my right to vote?

If you did not submit a Section 24A notification to the Electoral Commission by 17 May 2024, then you will not be able to vote outside of your voting district at another voting station on Election Day, 29 May 2024. You will unfortunately only be able to vote at the voting district and station at which you are registered. Remember to share this link with family and friends who may be travelling on Election Day too.
