Three (3) municipal ward by-elections will take place in the Eastern Cape and Northern Cape Provinces on Wednesday, 22 February 2023.
The by-elections will be contested by one (1) independent candidate and 13 candidates from six (6) political parties.
In the Eastern Cape
• Ward 02 in the Blue Crane Route Municipality – EC102, will be contested by Jason Rodney William Olifant of the African National Congress (ANC), Archer Brendo Carlo Heynse of the Democratic Alliance (DA), and Nomawonga Olivia Jezile of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF).The ward was previously represented by the DA and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s membership being terminated from the party. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2021 Municipal Elections was 56,86%.
• Ward 05 Blue Crane Route Municipality – EC102, will be contested by Anthony Hufkie of the ANC, Lorraine Elizabeth Smith Johnson of the DA, Nomasundu Agatha Mjadu of the EFF, and Urich Elvandré Robyn of the Patriotic Alliance (PA).The ward was previously represented by the DA and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s membership being terminated from the party. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2021 Municipal Elections was 51,29%.
In the Northern Cape
• Ward 01 in the Sol Plaatje Municipality – NC091, will be contested by an independent candidate, Vaughan Victory Settley, Gordon David Adams of the African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP), Ferguson Morris Moses of the ANC, Calvin Renato Johnson of the DA, Bonita Tasha Katz of the EFF, Johan Loff of the PA, and Adriana Justine Esau of the Sol-Plaatjie Service Delivery Forum (SPSDF).The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s death. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2021 Municipal Elections was 56,38%.
