Thirteen municipal ward by-elections will take place in the Eastern Cape, Gauteng KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, Northern Cape and Western Cape provinces on Wednesday, 10 April 2019.
The by-elections will be contested by fifty two candidates from eleven political parties and three candidates are running as independents.
In the Eastern Cape:
Ward 2 in Dr. Beyers Naude Municipality – EC101 will be contested by Petronella Estrolieta April from the African National Congress (ANC) and Ricardo Llewellyn Smith from the Democratic Alliance (DA).
The ward was previously represented by the DA and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s resignation. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 municipal elections was 67.56% and the DA candidate won the ward with 76.30% of valid votes.
Ward 18 in Intsika Yethu Municipality – EC135 will be contested by Lusanda Makade from the African National Congress (ANC), Anna Mtshonisi from the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and Ntsikelelo Hobson Mcaleni from the United Democratic Movement (UDM).
The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 municipal elections was 57.57% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 83.07% of valid votes.
In Gauteng:
Ward 8 in Rand West City Municipality – GT485 will be contested by Chanel Elizabeth-Anné Joubert from the African Content Movement (ACM), Boy Reuben Van Der Merwe from ANC, Doneven Cloete from the DA and Patricia Festile-Khumalo from EFF.
The ward was previously represented by the DA and became vacant as a result of the resignation of the councillor. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 municipal elections was 61.06% and the DA candidate won the ward with 46.05% of valid votes.
Ward 50 in the City of Johannesburg Municipality – JHB will be contested by Masesi Maureen Sekolo as an independent, Bheki Mgaga from the ANC, Bhekukwenza Sibusiso Zungu from the African Transformation Movement (ATM), Zakhele Koos Hlabathi from the DA and Philani Mjijwa from EFF.
The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the resignation of the councillor. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 municipal elections was 55.64% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 77.46% of valid votes.
Ward 22 in the City of Johannesburg Municipality – JHB will be contested by Neo Tlhabaki from the African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP), Nkosephayo God-Slove Zungu from the ANC, Alice Khoarai from the ATM, Mongameli Arosi from DA and Botana Steven Mabasa from EFF, Mandlenkosi Henry Mhlongo from the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) and Ester Mmapula Mphepu from the National Freedom Party (NFP).
The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 municipal elections was 58.55% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 69.94% of valid votes.
In KwaZulu-Natal:
Ward 4 in Okhahlamba Municipality – KZN235 will be contested by Manqoba Herbert Hlatshwayo from ANC, Nkosinathi Richard Mhlanga from ATM; Siyabonga Ndimande from Congress Of The People (COPE), Sakhile Sizwe Dlalisa from the EFF, Mkhuzeni Johannes Hlongwane from the IFP and Fanuel Mbethu from the NFP.
The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the death of the councilor. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 municipal elections was 60.20% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 52.23% of valid votes.
Ward 21 in AbaQulusi Municipality – KZN263 will be contested by Nkosinathi Clement Mkhwanazi from ANC, Keneilwe Charlotte Nkadimeng from EFF; Eric Mlandeni Ngidi from the IFP, and Thabile Patience Mavimbela from the NFP.
The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the resignation of the councilor. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 municipal elections was 55.95% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 44.77% of valid votes.
In Mpumalanga:
Ward 6 in Chief Albert Luthuli Municipality – MP301 will be contested by Sibusiso Nicholus Dube from ANC, Zilindile Fisisa Nkosi from EFF and Thembinkosi Happiness Nhleko from the IFP.
The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the death of the councilor. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 municipal elections was 56.85% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 81.05% of valid votes.
Ward 13 in Msukaligwa Municipality – MP302 will be contested by Zacharia Kenny Dhludhlu from ANC, Siphiwe Florence Ngwenya from EFF and Simon Sipho Mthimunye from the IFP.
The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the resignation of the councilor. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 municipal elections was 52.49% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 79.01% of valid votes.
In the Northern Cape:
Ward 28 in Sol Plaatje Municipality – NC091 will be contested by Sebrina Tempest Engelbrecht from ANC, Herbert Bassil Japhta from the DA and Gizelle Van Wyk from the EFF.
The ward was previously represented by the DA and became vacant as a result of the resignation of the councilor. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 municipal elections was 63.68% and the DA candidate won the ward with 61.58% of valid votes.
In the Western Cape:
Ward 9 in Stellenbosch Municipality – WC024 will be contested by Lincoln Lodewyk Stander from ANC and Zelda Julia Dalling from the DA.
The ward was previously represented by the DA and became vacant as a result of the resignation of the councilor.The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 municipal elections was 56.48% and the DA candidate won the ward with 94.45% of valid votes.
Ward 4 in Hessequa Municipality – WC042 will be contested by John Abie Hoogbaard an independent, Wayne Wilhelm September and independent, Lisby Pieterse from ANC, Gerald Leonard Boezak from the DA and Benjamin Dell from the Vryheidsfront Plus.
The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the death of the councilor. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 municipal elections was 73.56% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 49.78% of valid votes.
Ward 18 in George Municipality – WC044 will be contested by Gert Cornelius Niehaus from the ACDP, Saziso Jack Khwitshana from the ANC, Donovan Gultig from the DA, Hein Melvin Scheepers from the EFF and Gert Johannes Van Niekerk from the Vryheidsfront Plus.
The ward was previously represented by the DA and became vacant as a result of the resignation of the councilor. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 municipal elections was 40.49% and the DA candidate won the ward with 93.35% of valid votes.
