Candidates contesting Municipal By-Elections on 27 March 2019

Three municipal ward by-elections will take place in the Eastern Cape, Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal provinces on Wednesday, 27 March 2019.

The by-elections will be contested by sixteen candidates from eight political parties.  

In the Eastern Cape:

Ward 21 in Nyandeni Municipality – EC155 will be contested by Nomnikelo Yehana from the African National Congress (ANC), Celiwe Nongqoqo from the African Transformation Movement (ATM), Fumanekile Hlazo from the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), and Thembelani Phahlane from the United Democratic Movement (UDM). 

The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 municipal elections was 48.33% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 81.06% of valid votes.

In Gauteng:

Ward 18 in Mogale City Municipality – GT18 will be contested by Keikantseng Meriam Seretsi from ANC, Andries Stephanus Eksteen from the Democratic Alliance (DA); Bianco-Lee Grossett from EFF, and Amanda De Lange from the Vryheidsfront Plus (VF Plus).

The ward was previously represented by the DA and became vacant as a result of the resignation of the councilor. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 municipal elections was 76.66% and the DA candidate won the ward with 89.22% of valid votes.

Ward 21 in the Mogale City Municipality – GT21 will be contested by Ernest Sello Sedingwe of ANC, Lynette Estelle Du Toit from DA, Madri Stefani Calitz from EFF, and Tjaart Johannes Steenkamp of VF Plus.

The ward was previously represented by the DA and became vacant as a result of the resignation of the councillor.  The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 municipal elections was 77.48% and the DA candidate won the ward with % of valid votes.

In KwaZulu-Natal:

Ward 18 in AbaQulusi Municipality – KZN263 will be contested by Thandanani Iward Zungu from ANC, Philisiwe Fortunate Mtshali from EFF; Ziqu Mandlakayise Ngcobo from the Inkatha Freedom Party, and Africa Dumisani Mkhulise from the National Freedom Party.

The ward was previously represented by the IFP and became vacant as a result of the resignation of the councilor. The voter turnout for this ward in the by elections held on 6 December 2017 was 53.89% and the IFP candidate won the ward with 47.82% of valid votes.
