Candidates contesting Municipal By-Elections on 9 December 2020

Ninety five (95) candidates from various political parties will contest the twenty four (24) municipal ward by-elections set to take place in all nine provinces on Wednesday, 9 December 2020.

Voting will take place in 118 voting stations across the country.

In the Eastern Cape:

Ward 23 in Raymond Mhlaba – EC129 will be contested by four (4) candidates, namely, Dorothy May De Kok, an Independent candidate, Morien Bouwer, also an Independent candidate, Mpho Mahleza of the African National Congress (ANC) and Ensull Alphonsus Vitealingum from the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF).

The ward was previously represented by the ANC and the ward seat became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 53.91% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 48.47% of valid votes.

Ward 13 in Engcobo – EC137 will be contested by two (2) candidates, namely, Sevuyile Mfeki of the ANC and Pateka Patience Lwana of the EFF.

The ward was previously represented by the ANC and the ward seat became vacant as a result of the resignation of the councillor. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 51.88% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 90.79% votes.

In the Free State:

Ward 20 in Dihlabeng Municipality– FS192 will be contested by three (3) candidates, namely, Independent candidate Lanny Lannie Mokwena, Johan Johannes Nhlapo of the African National Congress (ANC) and Sekgothe Simon Makhoa of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF).

The ward was previously represented by the ANC and the ward seat became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 68.09% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 50.92% votes.

Ward 11 in Mangaung Municipality– MAN will be contested by two (2) candidates, namely, Motlhokung Theodorah Mosala of the ANC and Elizabeth Dimakatso Dlayedwa of the EFF.

The ward was previously represented by the ANC and the ward seat became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 49.42% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 77.55% votes.

In Gauteng:

Ward 27 in Ekurhuleni Municipality– EKU will be contested by five (5) candidates, namely, Independent candidate Audrey  Ernestine Steyn, Jacques Meiring of the ANC, Lornette Jayne Joseph of the Democratic Alliance (DA), Nomthandazo Madonna Bembe of the EFF and Karl Choenraad Rautenbach of the Vryheidsfront Plus.

The ward was previously represented by the DA and the ward seat became vacant as a result of the termination of the councillor membership from the party. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 72.35% and the DA candidate won the ward with 91.89% of valid votes

Ward 28 in Ekurhuleni Municipality– EKU will be contested by five (5) candidates, namely, Independent candidate Malanie Haggard, Hans Petrus Jacobs of the ANC, Mary Elizabeth Goby of the DA, Maremane Esau Mapea of the EFF and Jennifer Anne Glover of the Vryheidsfront Plus.

The ward was previously represented by the DA and the ward seat became vacant as a result of resignation the councillor from the party. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 70.19% and the DA candidate won the ward with 90.62% of valid votes.

Ward 42 in Ekurhuleni Municipality– EKU will be contested by four (4) candidates, namely, Mongezi Victor Ntanjana of the African Independent Congress (AIC), Musa Sylvia Nkosi, also of the ANC, Izelle Senol of the DA and Ngako Alfred Matladi of the EFF.

The ward was previously represented by the ANC and the ward seat became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 58.89% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 44.03% of valid votes.

In KwaZulu Natal:

Ward 66 in eThekwini Municipality– ETH will be contested by six (6) candidates, namely, Louise Denise Emser of the ANC, Zoë Adele Solomon of the DA, Siyanda Dlamini of the EFF, Satishrai Bhanprakash of the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), Nompumelelo Thabisile Dlamini of the Justice and Employment Party and Jason Scott Johnson from the Vryheidsfront Plus.

The ward was previously represented by the DA and the ward seat became vacant as a result of the councilor’s resignation. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 62.11% and the DA candidate won the ward with 80.46% of valid votes.

In Limpopo:

Ward 1 in Musina Municipality– LIM341 will be contested by three (3) candidates, namely, Mashudu Meltah Munzhelele of the ANC, Elizabeth Anna Magrietha Van Staden of the DA and Timoti Mbedzi of the EFF.

The ward was previously represented by the ANC and the ward seat became vacant as a result of the councilor’s death. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 52.41% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 64.14% of valid votes.

Ward 20 in Blouberg Municipality– LIM351 will be contested by two (2) candidates, namely, Matome Josiah Mathekga of the ANC and Mmamoloko Idah Chokoe from the EFF.

The ward was previously represented by the ANC and the ward seat became vacant as a result of the councilor’s death.The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 53.77% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 74.42% of valid votes.

In Mpumalanga:

Ward 5 in Nkomazi Municipality– MP324 will be contested by three (3) candidates, namely, Lucky Nhlanhla Shongwe of the ANC, Thulani Khezari Hlonguane of the African Transformation Movement (ATM) and Zodwa Ellen Mashaba from the EFF.

The ward was previously represented by the ANC and the ward seat became vacant as a result of the councilor’s death. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 59.83% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 90.78% of valid votes.

Ward 15 in Nkomazi Municipality– MP324 will be contested by three (3) candidates, namely Thandeka Vestar Ngcane of the ANC, Sipho Elvas Bhiya of the DA and Maria Naillina Mahlalela of the EFF.

The ward was previously represented by the ANC and the ward seat became vacant as a result of the councilor’s death. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 55.09% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 76.04% of valid votes.

Ward 16 in Bushbuckridge Municipality– MP325 will be contested by three (3) candidates, namely Matthews Mangani of the ANC, Lillian Mmina Mashile of the DA and Botty Mapex Molobela of the EFF.

The ward was previously represented by the Better Residents Association and the ward seat became vacant as a result of termination of Councillor’s membership from the party. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 63.00% and the candidate won the ward with 58.11% of valid votes.

Ward 18 in Bushbuckridge Municipality– MP325 will be contested by two (2) candidates, namely Grinios Betsang Sebatane of the ANC and Vusi Fosca Hlathi of the EFF.

The ward was previously represented by the Better Residents Association and the ward seat became vacant as a result of termination of Councillor’s membership from the party. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 59.30% and the candidate won the ward with 53.51% of valid votes.

Ward 32 in Bushbuckridge Municipality– MP325 will be contested by two (2) candidates, Selby Owen Malatsie of the ANC and Shadrack Rakanang Mogane of the EFF.

The ward was previously represented by the Better Residents Association and the ward seat became vacant as a result of termination of Councillor’s membership from the party. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 57.59% and the candidate won the ward with 47.19% of valid votes.

In North West:

Ward 10 in Ratlou Municipality– NW381 will be contested by three (3) candidates, namely, Independent candidate Matlhomola Jacob Mogodu, Kekgethile Makutle of the ANC and Mosimanegape Simon Makwati of the EFF.

The ward was previously represented by the ANC and the ward seat became vacant as a result of the councilor’s death. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 59.15% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 55.80% of valid votes.

In the Northern Cape:

Ward 3 in Thembelihle Municipality– NC076 will be contested by five (5) candidates, namely, Independent candidates Evelynn Lynett Oliphant, Suzette Eloma Madekane and Travor James Clemance Louw, Victor Siphiwo Dolopi of the ANC and Clemens Oliphant of the EFF.

The ward was previously represented by the ANC and the ward seat became vacant as a result of the councilor’s death.

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 66.40% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 54.16% of valid votes.

Ward 3 in !Kheis Municipality– NC084 will be contested by four (4) candidates, namely, Independent candidates Alricko Lee-Shano Smith and Paul Vries, Annaline Tobias of the ANC and Leroy Eddi ˚N Jack.

The ward was previously represented by the ANC and the ward seat became vacant as a result of the councilor’s death. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 73.14% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 51.71% of valid votes.

In the Western Cape:

Ward 15 in the City of Cape Town – CPT will be contested by six (6)) candidates, namely, Mogamat Nuril Anwa Peters of the ANC, Nazmie Jamodien of Al Jama-Ah, Ian Patrick Mc Mahon of the DA, Anwar Adams of the Democratic Independent Party (DIP), Nonkosazana Mzotsho of the EFF and Joy Davids from the Good Party.

The ward was previously represented by the DA and the ward seat became vacant as a result of the resignation of the councillor. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 76.19% and the DA candidate won the ward with 94.61% of valid votes.

Ward 9 in the Langeberg Municipality – WC026 will be contested by six (6) candidates, namely, Independent candidate Pieter Hermeehas Kana, Benjamin Van Rooi of the ANC, Jim Jacobus Pietersen of Congress of the People (Cope), Sonja Deidre Beginsel of DA, Fernando Leslie Walters of the EFF and Samuel Daniel Janse of the Independent Civic Organisation of South Africa.

The ward was previously represented by the DA and the ward seat became vacant as a result of the termination of the councillor’s membership from the party.The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 57.35% and the DA candidate won the ward with 60.35% of valid votes.

Ward 12 in the Overstrand Municipality – WC032 will be contested by four (4) candidates, namely Marilyn Tom of the ANC, Johanna Lydia Morgan of the DA, Mahluko Zondiwe of the EFF and Michael Mhana of the Land Party.

The ward was previously represented by the ANC and the ward seat became vacant as a result of the resignation of the councillor. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 58.67% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 88.69% of valid votes.

Ward 4 in the Oudtshoorn Municipality – WC045 will be contested by six (6) candidates, namely Independent candidates Ewa Fortuin and Mlandeli Abednico Nyuka, Gillian Vivienne Carolus of the ANC, Fielies September of the DA, Cyril Anthony Moyene of the EFF and Miriam Mardeleine Smith of the Good Party.

The ward was previously represented by the DA and the ward seat became vacant as a result of resignation of the councillor. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 48.12% and the DA candidate won the ward with 43.95% of valid votes.

Ward 5 in the Oudtshoorn Municipality – WC045 will be contested by seven (7) candidates, namely Independent candidates Adriaan Van Niekerk, Hendrik Ruiters and William Arthur Bezuidenhout, Naomi Jonkers of the ANC, Jacqueline Lorna Emelda Meyer of the DA, Robin Jullies of the EFF and Carline Konstabel of Good Party.

The ward was previously represented by the DA and the ward seat became vacant as a result of resignation of the councillor. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 56.28% and the DA candidate won the ward with 35.58% of valid votes.

Ward 10 in the Oudtshoorn Municipality – WC045 will be contested by five (5) candidates, namely Independent candidate Nellie Soman, Booi Berry of the ANC, Robin Benjamin Bosman of the DA, Zanelizwi Aubrey Rala of the EFF and Ashwill Oktober of Good Party.

The ward was previously represented by the DA and the ward seat became vacant as a result of resignation of the councillor. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 61.03% and the DA candidate won the ward with 43.35% of valid votes.
