Candidates contesting Municipal By-elections on 26 November 2025

Thirty-three candidates representing 11 political parties, along with one independent candidate, will contest the by-elections scheduled for 26 November 2025 in the Eastern Cape, Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and the Northern Cape.

Eastern Cape

  • Ward 10 in the Makana Municipality – EC104 will be contested by six political party candidates. 

1. Andile Arnold Mbeju of the African National Congress (ANC)

2. Ayanda Christopher Bodla of the Democratic Alliance (DA)

3. Losi Patrick Phaphu of the South African Communist Party (SACP)

4. Phaphama Nkontsa of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF)

5. Nomatamsanqa Mavikela of the Patriotic Alliance (PA)

6.Thembinkosi Basil Ngeleza of the Makana Citizens Front (MCF)

The ward became vacant because of councillor’s death.

  • Ward 02 in the Kouga Municipality – EC108 will be contested by four political party candidates. 

1. Robert Hitzeroth Dennis of the African National Congress (ANC)

2. Bonita Moos of the DA

3. Roelof Johannes Pretorius of the Congress of the People (COPE)

4. Charlene Theresa Dicken of the Patriotic Alliance (PA)

The ward became vacant because of resignation of councillor.

  • Ward 02 in the Kou-Kamma Municipality – EC109 will be contested by three political party candidates. 

1. Stanley Plaatjies of the African National Congress (ANC)

2. Kevin Ralph Grootboom of the DA

3. Michael Andrew Hartz of the Patriotic Alliance (PA)

The ward became vacant because of resignation of councillor.

Gauteng 

  • Ward 10 in the Merafong City Municipality – GT484 will be contested by six political party candidates. 

1. Tshepiso Chester Sekgothudi of the African National Congress (ANC)

2. Christian Modise Mohloli of the Pan Africanist Congress of Azania (PAC)

3. Letsoko Abraham Quentine Galo of the Democratic Alliance (DA)

4. Lentswe Hendrick Swazi of the EFF

5. Mokete Botha Nthonga of the ActionSA

6. Rakose Abel Malefo of the Umkhonto Wesizwe Party (MKP)

The ward became vacant because of the death of the councillor.

  • Ward 90 in the City of Johannesburg Municipality – JHB will be contested by two political party candidates.

1. Sihlangule Mmiselo Siwisa of the African National Congress (ANC)

2. Renate Jo Van Onselen of the Democratic Alliance (DA)

The ward became vacant because of the death of the councillor.

KwaZulu Natal

  • Ward 17 in the Mandeni Municipality – KZN291 will be contested by three political party candidates. 

1. Nondumiso Fortunate Precious Shandu of the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP)

2. Nkululeko Mnelisi Praise-God Nxumalo of the African National Congress (ANC)

3. Sphelele Knowledge Mkhwanazi of the MKP

The ward became vacant because of the termination of councillor’s membership from the party.

Northern Cape

  • Ward 07 in the Hantam Municipality – NC065 will be contested by four political party candidates.

1. Jan Andries Palm of the VRYHEIDSFRONT PLUS (VF Plus)

2. Jaslin Janfred Van Wyk of the African National Congress (ANC)

3. Louis Petrus Fourie of the Democratic Alliance (DA)

4. Henry Maans of the Patriotic Alliance (PA)

The ward became vacant because of the death of the councillor.

  • Ward 05, in the Siyancuma Local Municipality – NC078 will be contested by four political candidates and one independent candidate

1.       Gerrit Jacobus Van Staden of The African National Congress (ANC)

2.       Elidia Katrina Louw of The Democratic Alliance (DA)     

3.       Nadine Jacobs of The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF)        

4.       Danfrid Herald Morolong (Independent)        

5.       Deon Raymond Nico Ellison of The Patriotic Alliance (PA)

The ward became vacant because of resignation of councillor.
