The Electoral Commission welcomes today's judgment by the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate Court, which has acquitted Mr Musawenkosi Mnikathi of all charges.
Mr Mnikathi was employed by the Electoral Commission in the capacity of Area Manager in the uMsunduzi Municipality. At the heart of the role of the Area Manager is the responsibility to oversee the supply of electoral materials between the local municipal office of the Electoral Commission and the network of voting stations they are assigned to support. Handling of, and moving of electoral materials is an inherent responsibility of an Area Manager.
The Commission has consistently maintained that Mr Mnikathi acted lawfully in his official capacity. The Commission remains resolute in its commitment to electoral integrity and regards any intimidation or interference with its operations as a threat to democracy. We urge all South Africans to support election officials and respect their essential work.
The Commission continues to uphold the highest standards of professionalism and transparency. This ruling strengthens public confidence in our electoral processes and operations.
