On Wednesday, 23 July 2025,
by-elections were held in the provinces of Gauteng, the Northern Cape, and the
Western Cape. The Patriotic Alliance (PA) won a seat in the Drakenstein Local
Municipality that had previously been won by the Democratic Alliance (DA). The
African National Congress (ANC) and the DA retained the seats they had secured
in the 2021 Local Government Elections in Gauteng, Northern Cape, and Western
Cape.
Gauteng
The new ANC Councillor is:
- Chakane Petrus Mohlamme, in ward 35 in the Emfuleni Local Municipality,
GT421, Gauteng. The party retained the
seat it won in the 2021 Municipal Elections, with 37.71% of the total
votes cast, compared to 54.10% in the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter
turnout was 36.97%.
Northern Cape
The new ANC Councillor is:
- Rosie Annie Ludick, in ward 01 in the Sol Plaatjie Local
Municipality, NC091, Northern Cape. The
party retained the seat it won in the 2021 Municipal Elections, with 42.84% of the total votes cast, compared to
40.70% during the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout was 56.32%.
Western Cape
The new DA Councillor is:
- Rhime Louis Laubscher, in ward 06 in the Bergrivier Local
Municipality, WC013, Western Cape. The
party retained the seat it won in the 2021 Municipal Elections, with
44.84% of the total votes cast, compared to 39.83% during the 2021
Municipal Elections. Voter turnout was 62.65%.
The new PA Councillor is:
- Veronica Leoni Maralack-Boonzaaier, in ward 27 in the Drakenstein
Local Municipality, WC023, Western
Cape. The party won a seat
previously held by the Democratic Alliance in the 2021 Municipal
Elections, securing 42.81% of the
total votes cast, compared to 57.77% in the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter
turnout was 57.70%.
