In by-elections held on Wednesday, 26 November 2025, in the Eastern
Cape, Gauteng, Limpopo, KwaZulu-Natal and the Northern Cape, some political
parties lost seats while others gained, including an independent candidate.
In the Northern Cape, an Independent Candidate won ward 05,
previously held by the African National Congress (ANC), while the ANC secured
Ward 07 from the Democratic Alliance (DA). In the Eastern Cape, the ANC
and DA retained their seats in Wards 10 and 02 respectively, while in the
Kou-Kamma municipality (Ward 2), the Patriotic Alliance (PA) won a seat
previously held by the ANC. In KwaZulu-Natal, the uMkhonto
weSizwe (MK) Party won a seat previously held by the ANC. In Gauteng,
the DA and the ANC retained their seats – the DA in ward 90 and the ANC in Ward
10 for the ANC.

- Michael Andrew Hartz in
ward 02 in the Kou-Kamma Local Municipality, EC109, Eastern Cape. The
party won a seat previously held by the ANC in the 2021 Municipal
Elections, securing 44.04% of the total votes cast, compared to 45.95%
during the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout was 63.37%.
Gauteng
The new ANC Councillor is:
- Tshepiso Chester Sekgothudi in
ward 10 in the Merafong Local Municipality:GT484, Gauteng. The party
retained the seat it won in the 2021 Municipal Elections, securing 48.89 %
of the total votes cast, compared to 75.52% during the 2021 Municipal
Elections. Voter turnout was 43.29%.
The new DA Councillor is:
- Renate Jo Van Onselen in
ward 90 in the City of Johannesburg Municipality, JHB, Gauteng. The party
retained the seat it won in the 2021 Municipal Elections, securing 97.18%
of the total votes cast, compared to 70.16% during the 2021 Municipal
Elections. Voter turnout was 18.15%.
Kwa-Zulu Natal
The new uMkhonto weSizwe Councillor is:
- • Sphelele Knowledge Mkhwanazi in ward 17 in the Mandeni Local
Municipality, KZN291, Kwa-Zulu Natal. The party won a seat previously held by the ANC in
the 2021 Municipal Elections, securing 61.01% of the total votes cast, compared
to 65.28 during the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout was 44.43%.
Northern Cape
The new ANC Councillor is:
- Jaslin Janfred Van Wyk in
ward 07 in the Hantam Local Municipality, NC065, Northern Cape. The party won a seat previously held by the DA in the 2021 Municipal Elections,
securing 42.13% of the total votes cast, compared to 34.53% during the
2021 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout was 56.90%.
The new Independent Councillor is:
- Danfrid Herald Morolong in ward 05 in the Siyancuma Local Municipality, NC078, Northern Cape. The
independent candidate won a seat previously held by the ANC in the 2021
Municipal Elections, securing 46.86% of the total votes cast, compared to
55.91% during the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout was 65.70%.
