South Africans have hours left to register to vote in the 2024 Elections

Eligible South African voters have until midnight, Friday 23 February 2024, to register to vote or update their registration information before the voters’ roll closes.

The President and the Provincial Premiers will proclaim the 2024 National and Provincial Elections voting day, 29 May 2024, during the course of the day on Friday, 23 February 2024. Voter registration for an election closes with proclamation of the election date. Registration and re-registration for the 2024 National and Provincial Elections will therefore close at midnight on 23 February 2024.

“The 2024 general elections are historic in that they mark the 30th year of electoral democracy. We do not wish for any eligible citizen to miss out on this historic democratic process," says Sy Mamabolo, Chief Electoral Officer of the Electoral Commission (IEC).

The online voter registration portal, registertovote.elections.org.za, will allowing everyone to update their details from the comfort of their own homes, work places and communities.  Citizens have until midnight to use the platform for voter registration and update their particulars. Citizens out of country also have access to the same voter registration platform until midnight.

Citizens in-country may also visit local IEC offices in the all municipalities to register to vote. Our offices remain operational until 17h00 today, Friday 23 February 2024.

Voters can also reach the IEC for assistance using the contact centre on 0800 11 8000, the livechat on the voter registration portal, or the IEC’s WhatsApp chatbot by saying ‘Hi’ to 060 088 0000.

Mamabolo assured South Africans that the Electoral Commission’s staff members are on high alert to assist voters at IEC offices in various municipalities during the last hours of voter registration.

The Electoral Commission once again reminds eligible voters of the general rule in elections. That is, a person must register where they live, and vote at the voting station where they are registered. The only exception to the rule is that a voter may vote outside of the voting district of registration after notifying the Electoral Commission by a date set in the Election Timetable, which is to be announced shortly.
