Results of the municipal by-elections held on 22 May 2013

The Electoral Commission (IEC) said the African National Congress won three of the six municipal ward by-elections which took place on Wednesday, 22 May 2013. Of the remaining seats, two went to the Democratic Alliance and one to the Inkatha Freedom Party.

Voter turnout varied between 27,45% and 72,26% with an average of 45.99%.

The by-election which took place in KwaZulu-Natal was won by the African National Congress. Kwenzakufani Melchior Dlamini is the new councillor in Ward 2, Impendle [Impendle] Municipality – KZN224. The party retained the seat.

The by-election scheduled for Ward 4 in Jozini [Mkuze] Municipality – KZN272 was postponed, by the Member of Executive Council (MEC) responsible for Local Government in Kwazulu-Natal, at the request of the Commission.

Two (2) by-elections took place in Mpumalanga. The new councillors are:
• Thembinkosi William Zulu of the Inkatha Freedom Party in Ward 7, Albert Luthuli [Elukwatini/Carolina] Municipality – MP301. The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress; and

• Paul Bodutu Mokgosinyane of the African National Congress in Ward 6, Thaba Chweu [Sabie] Municipality – MP321. The party retained the seat.

The by-election which took place in the Northern Cape was won by the African National Congress. Hendrik Selodis Apollis is the new councillor in Ward 1, NAMA KHOI [Springbok] Municipality – NC062. The ward was previously represented by the Democratic Alliance.

The two (2) by-elections which took place in the Western Cape both went to the Democratic Alliance. The new councillors are:
• Justin Adriaan Basson in Ward 105, City of Cape Town [Cape Town] Municipality – CPT. The party retained the seat; and
• Hendrik Hermanus Ingo in Ward 6, George [George] Municipality – WC044. The party retained the seat.
