Candidates contesting Municipal By- elections on 24 May 2023

CENTURION – Five municipal ward by-elections will take place in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal provinces on Wednesday, 24 May 2023.

The by-elections will be contested by eighteen (18) candidates from six (6) political parties.

In Gauteng:

• Ward 25 in Ekurhuleni Municipality – EKU will be contested by five candidates, 1. Jan Jabulani Mahlangu of the African National Congress (ANC), 2. Daniel Jacobus Christoffel Putter  of the Democratic Alliance (DA), 3. Lulu Loraine De Beer of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), 4. Tandiwe Joyce Jikumlambo of the Independent Citizens Movement (ICM), and 5.  Jean Kriek of the Vryheidsfront Plus (FFPlus). The ward was previously represented by the Democratic Alliance (DA) and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s resignation. The voter turnout for this ward in 2021 the Municipal Elections was 51,88%.

• Ward 08 in  Lesedi Municipality – GT423, will be contested by four candidates, 1. Jabulane Hendrik Shabalala of the ANC; 2. Yvonne Combrinck of the DA; 3. Phumlani Mazibuko of the EFF and 4. Joanadine Coetzee of the Vryheidsfront Plus (FFPlus). The ward was previously represented by DA and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s resignation. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2021 Municipal Elections was 52,36%.

In eThekwini:

• Ward 73 in eThekwini Municipality – ETH, will be contested by  three candidates, 1. Devaraj Rama Pillay of the ANC, 2. Daniel Logan Mea of the DA and 3. Ravanasithan Pillay of the EFF. The ward was previously represented by DA and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s resignation. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2021 Municipal Elections was 49,10%.

• Ward 15 in Mandeni Municipality – KZN291, will be contested by three candidates, 1. Ngcebo Richman Dludla of the ANC, 2. Mbuso Brain Sibiya of the EFF and 3. Khulekani Christopher Langa of the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP). The ward was previously represented by ANC and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s death. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2021 Municipal Elections was 40,56%.

• Ward 12 in the uMzimkhulu Municipality – KZN435, will be contested by three candidates, 1. Leonard Thembinkosi Sosibo of the ANC, 2. Anga Mzolo of the EFF and 3. Ongeziwe Nombongo Ngcem of the IFP. The ward was previously represented by ANC and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s death. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2021 Municipal Elections was 50,39%.
