Candidates contesting Municipal By-elections on 5 April 2023

Ten (10) municipal ward by-elections will take place in the Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and the Mpumalanga provinces on Wednesday, 5 April 2023.

The by-elections will be contested by five (5) independent candidates and 38 candidates from fourteen (14) political parties. 

In Gauteng

• Ward 16 in the Merafong City Municipality – GT484, will be contested by Hendrik Andrewe Selemela of the African National Congress (ANC); David Henry Harman of the Democratic Alliance (DA); Comfort Sibususo Lubisi of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF); Cerise Mtshatsheni of the Merafong Agents of Change (MAC). 

The ward was previously represented by DA and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s resignation. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2021 Municipal Elections was 42,16%.

• Ward 105 City of Tshwane Municipality – TSH, will be contested by Kgaugelo Stephans Phiri of the ANC, Anna Alida Erasmus of the DA, Moleboheng Alice Mamushi of the EFF, Thabo Charles Pheku of the GOOD party; and Ana Paula Mesquita Botha of the Republic Conference of Tshwane.

The ward was previously represented by ANC and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s death. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2021 Municipal Elections was 47,81%.

In the KwaZulu-Natal

• Ward 06 in the uMvoti Municipality – KZN245, will be contested by Mlungisi Siyabonga Makhaye of the Abantu Batho Congress (ABC), S’phiwe Nkululeko Ngidi of the  ANC, Sithembiso Xolani Gasa of the EFF and  Sanele Jacobs Makhaya of the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP).

The ward was previously represented by the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s resignation. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2021 Municipal Elections was 56,20%.

• Ward 12 in the AbaQulusi Municipality – KZN263, will be contested by Themba Kunene of the ANC, Duduzile Maureen Mdllose of the EFF, Thulani Patrick Buthelezi of the IFP;  and Mthengi Godfrrey Zulu.

The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s death. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2021 Municipal Elections was 54,17%.

• Ward 11 in the Nongoma Municipality – KZN265, will be contested by an independent candidate, Mlindeleni Petros Sikhumbuzo Ntshangase, Sikhumbuzo Ntshangase of the ActionSA, Simangele Delisile Khumalo of the ANC, Zakhele Zungu of the African People’s Movement (APM), Phumzile Perseverence Nkosi of the EFF, Ndukenhle Shawn Duma of the IFP, Zibonakalisile Bonisiwe Gumede of the Izwe Lethu Party; and Mphiliseni Bernard Mabanga of the Patriotic Alliance (PA).

The ward was previously represented by the IFP and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s resignation. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2021 Municipal Elections was 52,99%.

In Mpumalanga

• Ward 01 in the Mkhondo Municipality – MP303, will be contested by an independent candidate Siyabonga Sakhile Goodhope Mncube, Nosipho Dori Sangweni of the ANC; and Nkululeko Victor Ndebele of the EFF.

The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s resignation. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2021 Municipal Elections was 40,27%.

• Ward 02 in the Mkhondo Municipality – MP303, will be contested by an independent candidate Maria Busisiswe Vilakazi, Bhekumuzi Enock Maisela of the ANC, Siphamandla Cele of the EFF; and Sizwe Innocent Ngwenya of the IFP.

The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s resignation. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2021 Municipal Elections was 45,59%.

• Ward 19 in the Mkhondo Municipality – MP303, will be contested by an independent candidate Xolile Ndwandwe, Musa Samuel Lukhele of the ANC, Gunaphi Grace Galela of the EFF; and Nkosinathi Godfrey Mbuyisa of the IFP.

The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s resignation. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2021 Municipal Elections was 50,20%.

• Ward 05 in the Dipaleseng Municipality – MP306, will be contested by Zabilon Radebe of the ANC, Mhambi Jacob Mvulane of the EFF; and Tladi Jonas Mofokeng of the PA.

The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s death. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2021 Municipal Elections was 42,05%.

• Ward 04 in the Victor Khanye Municipality – MP311, will be contested by an independent candidate Joseph Sfiso Gamede, Edward Sipho Lebatse of the ANC, Simphiwe Trudy Nkabinde of the African Voice Progressive Party (AVPP); and Phabatso Shadrack Mofokeng of the EFF.

The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s death. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2021 Municipal Elections was 50,61%.
