Candidates contesting Municipal By-elections on 8 March 2023

Six municipal ward by-elections will take place in the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape Provinces on Wednesday, 8 March 2023.

The by-elections will be contested by one (1) independent candidate and 24 candidates from 11 political parties. 

In the Eastern Cape:

• Ward 15 in Ngquza Hill Municipality – EC153, will be contested by five (5) candidates, namely, Sizwe Chitha of the African National Congress (ANC), Xolani Orbry Noxhaka of the African People’s Convention (APC), Monwabisi Ntanjana of the African Transformation Movement (ATM), Mongezi Pama of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), and Nkosiphendulo Gingco of the United Democratic Movement (UDM).

The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s death. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2021 Municipal Elections was 34,19%.

In Kwazulu-Natal:

• Ward 24 in the Ray Nkonyeni Municipality – KZN216, will be contested by three (3) candidates, namely, Nkosinamandla Penuel Sihle Ndlela of the ANC, Balungile Pretty Gumede of the EFF, and Sbonelo Mbhele of the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP).

The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s resignation. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2021 Municipal Elections was 42,56%.

• Ward 12 in the uMshwathi Municipality – KZN221, will be contested by three (3) candidates, namely, Big-Boy Trevor Zondi of the ANC, Jacob Nqobizitha Bhengu of the EFF, and Zamambo Purity Mkhize on the IFP.

The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s death. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2021 Municipal Elections was 55,94%.

• Ward 02 in the Msunduzi Municipality – KZN225, will be contested by five (5) candidates, namely, Nomthandazo Regina Ntombela of the ANC, Ntokozo Vitalis Ntsikithi  of the Azanian People’s Organisation (AZAPO), Sithembiso Jeffrey Zondi of the EFF, Sibusiso Richard Ntuli of the IFP, and Sifiso Gwala of the Pan Africanist Congress of Azania (PAC).

The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s death. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2021 Municipal Elections was 58,36%.

• Ward 25 in the Msunduzi Municipality – KZN225, will be contested by three (3) candidates, namely, Najmah Banu Ahmed of the ANC, Reginald Xolani Khanyile of the Democratic Alliance (DA), and Zibuyile Khombisile Zuma of the EFF.

The ward was previously represented by the DA and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s resignation. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2021 Municipal Elections was 55,42%.

In the Western Cape:

• Ward 21 in Stellenbosch Municipality – WC024, will be contested by one (1) independent candidate, Sarah Dawn Van Wyk, and five (5) other candidates, namely, Otniel Linden Jooste of the African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP), Nuraan Van Kerwel of the ANC, Mynard Jacobus Slabbert of the DA, Marizaan Stelvinay George of the EFF, and Johannes Cyril Hector of the GOOD party.

The ward was previously represented by the DA and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s resignation. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2021 Municipal Elections was 66,95%
