Results of the Municipal By-elections held on 22 March 2023

During the by-elections contested yesterday in KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape, the African National Congress (ANC) retained one seat and gained additional seat, and the Inkatha Freedom Party also won a seat.

The new ANC councillors are:

• Buyisiwe Promise Zuma, in ward 08, Ubuhlebezwe Municipality – KZN434, KwaZulu-Natal. The party retained its seat won in 2021 Municipal Elections, with 69,72% of the total votes cast compared to 74,91% during the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 49 ,57%.

• Isaac Henry Ferguson, in ward 02, Swellendam Municipality – WC034, Western Cape. The party won the seat previously occupied by the Democratic Alliance with 37,10% of the total votes cast compared to 49,48% votes previously won by the DA during the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 65,03%.

The new Inkatha Freedom Party is:

• Cindy Mbali Fortunate Maphisa, in ward 12, Dannhauser Municipality - KZN254, KwaZulu-Natal. The party won the seat previously occupied by an Independent Candidate with 52,17% of the total votes cast compared to 30,01% votes previously won by an Independent Candidate during the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 54,49%
