Three municipal ward by-elections will take place in the Eastern Cape on Wednesday, 13 December 2017.
• Ward 5 in Kouga Municipality – EC108 with 3 592 registered voters which became vacant as a result of the termination of councillor membership from party.

The by-elections will be contested by two independent candidates and eight candidates representing four political parties as follows:
• Ward 5 in Kouga Municipality – EC108 will be contested by Desmond Neville Petersen, an independent candidate; Joseph Lukas of the African National Congress (ANC); Wilma Milinda Coenraad of the Democratic Alliance (DA); and Ntombizanele Dondashe of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF). The ward was previously represented by the DA and the seat became vacant as a result of termination of the councillor’s membership from the party. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 65.08%, and the DA candidate won the ward with 57.94% of the valid votes.
• Ward 4 in the Senqu Municipality – EC142 will be contested by Manthse Sonia Binca, an independent candidate; Asanda Portia Mqakelana of the ANC; Tsireletso Mokharanyana of the EFF; and Nandipha Diana Bakamela of Sterkspruit Civic Association (SCA). The ward was previously represented by the ANC and the seat became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 53.64%, and the ANC candidate won the ward with 66.24% of valid votes.
• Ward 6 in the Ntabankulu Municipality – EC444 will be contested by Mzikayise Tshaka of the ANC; and Nkosinathi Mhlana of the EFF. The ward was previously represented by the ANC and the seat became vacant as a result of the resignation of the councillor. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 48.84%, and the ANC candidate won the ward with 89.04% of valid votes.
