Candidates contesting Municipal By-Elections on 09 November 2016

Fifteen municipal ward by-elections will take place in Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, Northern Cape and Western Cape on Wednesday, 09 November 2016. The by-elections are being contested by 66 candidates representing 16 political parties and 2 independent candidates.

Six by-elections will take place in Eastern Cape
Ward 17 in the Mbhashe Municipality – EC121 will be contested by Pumzile Makeleni of the African National Congress; Zamile Timbani of the Economic Freedom Fighters and Phumlani Msengeni of the United Democratic Movement. The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor. 

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 49.67%


Ward 11 in the Raymond Mhlaba Municipality – EC129 will be contested by Luyanda Tyhobeka of the African National Congress; Yonela Nuba of the Democratic Alliance and Anele Bonani of the Economic Freedom Fighters.  The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant as a result of the resignation of the councillor.

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 58.59%


Ward 7 in the Port St Johns Municipality – EC154 will be contested by Fikile Andrew Jama of the African National Congress; Mkhulule Moses Sefa of the Civic Independent and Mthumeni Noxaka of the Economic Freedom Fighters.  The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor. 

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 51.81%


Ward 26 in the Mbizana Municipality – EC443 will be contested by Onesimo Nofemele of the African National Congress; Fundile Nicholas Mbali of the Economic Freedom Fighters; Nobahle Harrient Magqabi of the National Freedom Party and Manene Ashworth Nontshe of the Socialist Party of South Africa.  The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant as a result of the resignation of the councillor.

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 51.18%


Ward 4 in the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality – NMA will be contested by Johanna Marianne Lotter of the African Christian Democratic Party; Ayanda Tyokwana of the African National Congress; Thobani Sebastian Noqoli of the Democratic Alliance; Pepsi Lindile James of the Economic Freedom Fighters; Precious Zamukulunga Aja of the Pan Africanist Congress of Azania; Thandeka Frenki of the United Democratic Movement and Khayalethu Heavyground Makalima of the United Front of the Eastern Cape. The Ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor.

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 53.17%


Ward 14 in the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality – NMA will be contested by Dolly Buti of the African National Congress; Victor Mbulelo Manyati of the Democratic Alliance; Vuyisile Oliphant of the Economic Freedom Fighters; Khanya Mbengashe of the Pan Africanist Congress of Azania and Linda Penelope Mpako of the United Democratic Movement. The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant as a result of the resignation of the councillor.

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 62.34%

Three by-elections will take place in KwaZulu-Natal:
Ward 1 in the uMuziwabantu Municipality – KZN214 will be contested by Sonengaliphi Selby Maphumulo of the African National Congress; Simo Protus Kheswa of the Economic Freedom Fighters; Niniza Cleris Dlamini of the Inkatha Freedom Party and Thembelani Headman Dlamini of the National Freedom Party. The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor. 

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 51.48%


Ward 20 in the Alfred Duma Municipality – KZN238 will be contested by Nkululeka Freeman Ngobese of the Academic Congress Union; Thabisile Precious Njoko of the African National Congress; Hlangabeza Shadrack Sithebe of the Democratic Alliance; Ngitheni Millicent Beharie of the Economic Freedom Fighters; Siphamandla Mduduzi Njoko of the Inkatha Freedom Party; Nomusa Virginia Mashaya of the National Democratic Convention and Mukelani Sithembiso Sithole of the National Freedom Party. The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor. 

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 63.77%


Ward 6 in the Newcastle Municipality – KZN252 will be contested by Philani Ngcobo of the Academic Congress Union; Siphosakhe Zithulele Zulu of the African National Congress; Nontobeko Simphiwe Pamella Ngubo of the Economic Freedom Fighters; Nokukhanya Zamahabile Brightness Happyness Sithebe of the Inkatha Freedom Party and Hilda Masondo of the National Freedom Party.  The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor. 

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 61.43%

Two by-elections will take place in Limpopo:
Ward 3 in the New Municipality – LIM345 will be contested by Ntsako Samuel Baloyi an independent candidate; Ntsako Lauward Ngobeni of the African National Congress and Mkateko Isaac Mdaka of the Economic Freedom Fighters.  The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor. 

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 49.99%


Ward 10 in the Polokwane Municipality – LIM354 will be contested by Tlou John Matlou of the African National Congress; Jonas Evans Mothapo of the Economic Freedom Fighters and Andries Matidi Makhafola of the Forum 4 Service Delivery.  The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant as a result of the resignation of the councillor. 

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 55.72%

Two by-elections will take place in Mpumalanga:
Ward 7 in the Chief Albert Luthuli Municipality – MP301 will be contested by Sipho Thulani Mnisi of the African National Congress; Vusi Joseph Hleza of the Economic Freedom Fighters; Sipho Goodwell Shabangu of the Forum 4 Service Delivery; Harriet Vuyisile Mnisi of the Inkatha Freedom Party and Melvis Timothy Mbhokane of the National Freedom Party.  The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor. 

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 55.94%


Ward 6 in the Victor Khanye Municipality – MP311 will be contested by Diikgetse Ramaseka Sepenyane an independent candidate; Mhlupheki Meshack Thombeni of the African National Congress; Simon Mhlaba Skosana of the Democratic Alliance; Max Magagula of the Economic Freedom Fighters;  Petrus William of the National Freedom Party and Walter Austin Lewis of the Vyheidsfront Plus.  The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant as a result of the resignation of the councilor.

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 58.17%

One by-election will take place in the Northern Cape:
Ward 2 in the Kgatelopele Municipality – NC086 will be contested by Rodney Collin Lessing of the African National Congress; Ebrahim Mohammed Sulliman of the Democratic Alliance and Wilhelmina Cynthia Tsokolibane of the Economic Freedom Fighters.  The ward was previously represented by the Democratic Alliance and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor.

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 64.86%

One by-election will take place in the Western Cape:
Ward 108 in the City of Cape Town – CPT will be contested by Nontuthuzelo Eunice Temba of the African Independent Congress; Thembisile Mabhuti Batembu of the African National Congress; Sange Mxaka of the African People’s Convention; Wilma Estelle Brady of the Democratic Alliance and Gcobani Ntilashe of the Economic Freedom Fighters.  The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant as a result of resignation of the councillor.

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 55.91%

Voting will take place at voting stations in the relevant wards from 07h00 to 21h00 on Wednesday, 9 November 2016.

Voting hours for Mbhashe Municipality Ward 17 as well as Port St Johns Municipality Ward 7 in the Eastern Cape by-elections will be from 07h00 to 19h00.

You must be registered in a voting district within ward being contested in the by-election to be eligible to vote and voters must provide identification (either a green bar-coded ID book, a smartcard ID or a valid Temporary ID Certificate). Registered voters can SMS their ID number to 32810 (cost R1) or dial *120*432# and follow the prompts to check their voting station details.
