Candidates contesting Municipal By-Elections on 13 February 2019

Nine municipal ward by-elections will take place in the Northern Cape and Western Cape provinces on Wednesday, 13 February 2019.

The by-elections will be contested by forty candidates from seven political parties and nine independent candidates. 

In the Northern Cape: 

Ward 9 in the Sol Plaatjie Municipality – NC091 will be contested by Charles Setlogelo as an independent, Gladys Keikantsemang Monyamane as an independent, Dolly Mosetsanagape Swazi from the African National Congress (ANC), Catherine Vivian Du Plessis from the Democratic Alliance (DA) and Isaac Lehlohonolo Sephula from the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF). 

The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s membership termination from the party. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 municipal elections was 61.89% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 75.49% of valid votes.

Ward 11 in the Sol Plaatjie Municipality – NC091 will be contested by Yvonne Tshebeletso Qonga as an independent, Itumeleng Moses Mojakwe from the ANC, George Andrew Du Plooy from the DA and Kgosietsile David Shushu from the EFF.

The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s membership termination from the party. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 municipal elections was 58.72% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 80.80% of valid votes.

Ward 12 in the Sol Plaatjie Municipality – NC091 will be contested by Magdeline Mokgalagadi as an independent, Lesedi Lawrence Mocwagole from the ANC, Gaolaolwe Patrick Mokolopi from the African Transformation Movement, Ernest Olebogeng Maruping from the DA, Pontsho Moses Mocwana from the EFF.

The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s membership termination from the party. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 municipal elections was 60.63% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 81.16% of valid votes.

Ward 13 in the Sol Plaatjie Municipality – NC091 will be contested by Motlalepula Rachel Wapad as an independent, Margaret Kereditse Molatudi from the ANC, Motlatsi Ntate George Mangakane from the Azanian People's Organisation (APO) Jeffrey Nenis Fembers from the DA, Solomon Modisakeng from the EFF.

The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s membership termination from the party. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 municipal elections was 58.42% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 77.12% of valid votes.

Ward 16 in the Sol Plaatjie Municipality – NC091 will be contested by Boitumelo Joel Stout as an independent, Samuel Britz from the ANC, Margaret Boitumelo Bokala from the APO, Max Kazarra from the DA, Neo Irvin Mojakwe from the EFF.

The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s membership termination from the party. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 municipal elections was 64.00% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 85.13% of valid votes.

Ward 13 in the Sol Plaatjie Municipality – NC091 will be contested by Motlalepula Rachel Wapad as an independent, Margaret Kereditse Molatudi from the ANC, Motlatsi Ntate George Mangakane from the Azanian People's Organisation (APO) Jeffrey Nenis Fembers from the DA, Solomon Modisakeng from the EFF.

The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s membership termination from the party. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 municipal elections was 58.42% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 77.12% of valid votes.

Ward 19 in the Sol Plaatjie Municipality – NC091 will be contested by Boikanyo Pius Tshite as an independent, Itumeleng Abednego Lekoma from the ANC, Tebogo Brown Molusi from the DA, Cynthia Thembeka Kwenane from the EFF.

The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s membership termination from the party. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 municipal elections was 61.85% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 83.75% of valid votes.

Ward 32 in the Sol Plaatjie Municipality – NC091 will be contested by Agnes Dithato as an independent, Motsamai Nelson Molale as an independent, Frikkie Banda from the ANC, Hanzie Sibongo from the DA and Lute Maseka from the EFF.

The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s membership termination from the party. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 municipal elections was 57.60% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 76.46% of valid votes.

In the Western Cape:

Ward 54 in the City of Cape Town Municipality – CPT will be contested by Donald Munro from the ANC, Gavin Duncan Ford from the Cape Party/ Kaapse Party, Nicola Jowell from the DA and Kenneth David Brookes from the EFF.

The ward was previously represented by the DA and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s resignation. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 municipal elections was 62.72% and the DA candidate won the ward with 93.61% of valid votes.

Ward 4 in the Knysna Municipality – WC048 will be contested by Sithembele Sidwell Ngqezu from the ANC, Thobeka Elizabeth Duna from the DA and Elias Faku from the EFF.

The ward was previously represented by an independent candidate and become vacant as a result of the removal of a councillor from a council. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 municipal elections was 62.98% and the DA candidate won the ward with 29% of valid votes.
