Three municipal ward by-elections will take place in the Western Cape province on Wednesday, 16 January 2019.
The by-elections will be contested by twelve candidates from five political parties and one independent.
Ward 31 in the City of Cape Town Municipality – CPT will be contested by Charmaine Sarah Marion Malgas from the African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP), Bazoya Vuyolwetu Mtini from the African National Congress (ANC), Theresa Bereniece Thompson from the Democratic Alliance (DA), Kenneth David Brookes from the Democratic Independent Party and Theresa Amelia Jafta from the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF).
The ward was previously represented by the DA and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s resignation. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 municipal elections was 61.16% and the DA candidate won the ward with 81.02% of valid votes.
Ward 101 in the City of Cape Town Municipality – CPT will be contested by Siyabonga Solly Duka from the ANC, Siseko Mbandezi from the DA and Lucky Nyameko Valela from the EFF. The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s death.
The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 municipal elections was 57.29% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 83.89% of valid votes.
Ward 5 in the Bergrivier Municipality – WC013 will be contested by Andries Jaars, an independent, Jan Maarman from ACDP, Immanuel Stefney Adams from the ANC, Adam Andreas Van Wyk from the DA and Dirk Jakobus Adams from the EFF.
The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the expulsion of the councillor by the MEC. The voter turnout for this ward in the by elections held on 23 August 2017 was 57.76% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 53.91% of valid votes.
