Candidates contesting Municipal By-Elections on 20 June 2018

Two municipal ward by-elections will take place in the Eastern Cape and Mpumalanga provinces on Wednesday, 20 June 2018.

The by-elections will be contested by one independent candidate and six candidates from four (4) political parties.  

The by-election candidates and voting stations in the Eastern Cape are as follows:

Ward 6 in Emalahleni Municipality – EC136 will be contested by Nicholas Nqabeni James of the African National Congress (ANC); Thandokazi Mankeyi of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF); and Lundi Mdokwana of the United Democratic Movement (UDM). The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the resignation of the councillor. 

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 62.23% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 93.89% of valid votes.

The by-election candidates and voting stations in Mpumalanga are as follows:

Ward 5 in Bushbuckridge Municipality – MP325 will be contested by Elvis Nyathikase, an independent candidate; Sabelo Tears Mkhabela of the ANC; Lort Sbongiseni Mgwenya of the Better Residents Association (BRA); and Creens Mashele of the EFF. The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor. 

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 50.90% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 87.97% of valid votes.
