Candidates contesting Municipal By-Elections on 25 April 2018

Seven municipal ward by-elections will take place in Gauteng, the North West and the Western Cape on Wednesday, 25 April 2018.

The by-elections will be contested by two independent candidates and 30 candidates from seven (7) political parties.  

In Gauteng: 

• Ward 72 in The City of Johannesburg – JHB will be contested by Pheladi Shirley Mafalo of the African National Congress (ANC); Lionel Mervin Greenberg of the Democratic Alliance (DA); and Bongi Thabiso Mmako of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF). The ward was previously represented by the DA and became vacant as a result of the resignation of the councillor. 

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 64.91% and the DA candidate won the ward with 82.48% of valid votes.

• Ward 88 in the City of Johannesburg – JHB will be contested by Oscar Plange, an independent candidate; Manyunyu Florence Sosiba of the ANC David Leonard Hensman of the (DA) and Simon Majola of the EFF. The ward was previously represented by the DA and became vacant as a result of the resignation of the councillor. 

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 68.96% and the DA candidate won the ward with 81.64% of valid votes.

• Ward 92 in the City of Johannesburg – JHB will be contested by Mbongeni Matshaya of the African Independent Congress (AIC); Violet Ncikazi Chauke of the (ANC); Mosegi Otto Kgeletsane of the (DA); and Calvin Matome Mokgawa of the  (EFF). The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the resignation of the councillor. 

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 51.17% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 47.30% of valid votes.

• Ward 47 in Tshwane Metro – TSH will be contested by Beveley Junenite Brown the ANC; Daryl Johnston of the DA; and Nozibele Abongile Rataza of the EFF. The ward was previously represented by the DA and became vacant as a result of the resignation of the councillor.

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 73.23% and the DA candidate won the ward with 87.50% of valid votes.

In the North West:

• Ward 15 in Ditsobotla – NW384 will be contested by Motewa Petrus Nkate, an independent candidate; Gaafele Rosinah Nthompe of the ANC; Clarence Aubrey Algar of the DA; Bongane Patrick Cekiso of the EFF; and Pieter Johanness Barend Pretorius of the Vryheidsfront Plus (VF Plus). The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor. 

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 51.88% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 56.44% of valid votes.

In the Western Cape:

• Ward 10 in Breede Valley Municipality – WC025 will be contested by Julie Jakobus Jeneke of the African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP); Awie Booysen of ANC; Colin Frederick Wilskut of the Breedevallei Onafhanklik (BO); Mac-Lizia Rhuenda Solomons of the DA; Peter Leonard of the EFF; and Glenda Lilian Daames of the VF Plus. The ward was previously represented by the DA and became vacant as a result of the resignation of the councillor. 

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 58.15% and the DA candidate won the ward with 58.28% of valid votes.

• Ward 18 in George Municipality – WC044 will be contested by Karen Van Zyl of the ACDP; Valesca Joan Erlank of the ANC; Jannie van der Westhuizen of the DA; Marthinus Christoffel Muller of the EFF; and Gert Johannes Van Niekerk of the VVP. The ward was previously represented by the DA and became vacant as a result of the resignation of the councillor. 

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 74.58% and the DA candidate won the ward with 93.35% of valid votes.
