Two municipal ward by-elections will take place in Gauteng and the North West provinces on Wednesday, 28 February 2018.
The by-elections will be contested by ten candidates from seven political parties.
In Gauteng:
• Ward 14 in the City of Johannesburg – JHB will be contested by Thomas Makapane Mokwena of the African National Congress (ANC); Mbali Nkosi of the Congress of the People (COPE); Motau Moses Maloma of the Democratic Alliance (DA); Sibusiso Ndaba of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF); Tsepo Brian Molepe of the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP); and Ntombizodwa Barbara Bhembe of the Party of Action (PAA). The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor.
The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 55.45% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 63.53% of valid votes.
In the North West:
• Ward 20 in Mafikeng Municipality – NW383 will be contested by Thotinyane Wendy Maseng the ANC; Aaron Mnyamezeli Resha of the DA; Lucky Edwin Oepeng of the EFF; and Mandula Alice Setshedi of the United Christian Democratic Party (ACDP). The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor.
The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 51.17% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 58.03% of valid votes.
