Candidates contesting Municipal By-Elections on 6 March 2019


Eight municipal ward by-elections will take place in the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and Limpopo provinces on Wednesday, 6 March 2019.

The by-elections will be contested by thirty five candidates from thirteen political parties. 

In the Eastern Cape: 

Ward 2 in the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality – NMA will be contested by Dawn Rogers from the African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP), Oliver Gordon Copley from the African National Congress (ANC), Antonie Deon Pieterse from the Congress of the People (COPE), Renaldo Gouws from the Democratic Alliance (DA) and Khanya Mikuwo Ganjana from the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF).

The ward was previously represented by the DA and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s resignation. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 municipal elections was 73.87% and the DA candidate won the ward with 89.69% of valid votes.

In KwaZulu-Natal:

Ward 88 in the eThekwini Municipality – ETH will be contested by Thembinkosi Ziphozonke Mathe from the ANC, Mandy Zanele Langa from the EFF, Sibongokuhle Mbali Ndwandwe from the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) and Bonginkosi Edisson Ngcobo from the National Freedom Party (NFP). 

The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s death. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 municipal elections was 50.15% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 73.67% of valid votes.

Ward 91 in the eThekwini Municipality – ETH will be contested by Philani Louis Hlengwa from the ANC, Sthembiso Cyril Chonco from the EFF and Bonga Thandumbuso Msomi from the IFP.

The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s death. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 municipal elections was 63.12% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 77.57% of valid votes.

Ward 3 in the eNdumeni Municipality – KZN241 will be contested by Mathula Innocent Nkosi from the ANC, Philani Nhlakanipho Mzimela from the EFF, Mbulelo Phakati from the IFP and Manfred Phumulani Lushaba from the NFP. 

The ward was previously represented by the IFP and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s termination of the councillor’s membership from the party. The voter turnout for this ward during the 27 September 2017 municipal by-elections was 66.20% and the IFP candidate won the ward with 52.59% of valid votes.

Ward 22 in the Newcastle Municipality – KZN252 will be contested by Sizwe William Mngomezulu from the ANC, Philisiwe Felicitises Mazibuko from the EFF, Vanetia Snikiwe Mdluli from the IFP and Siyabonga Ntuli from the NFP. 

The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s death. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 municipal elections was 43.86% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 72.39% of valid votes.

Ward 3 in the Nongoma Municipality – KZN265 will be contested by Bongani Taribo Thabethe from the ANC, Ntozakhe Hloniphani Masango from the EFF, Elliot Shiba from the IFP, Dumisani Joseph Masango from the NFP and Nkosinathi Zakhele Ndlangamandla from the National People’s Front (NPF). 

The ward was previously represented by the IFP and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s death. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 municipal elections was 60.47% and the IFP candidate won the ward with 48.99% of valid votes.

Ward 7 in the uMhlabuyalingana Municipality – KZN271 will be contested by Eric Thembenkosini Nxumalo from the ANC, Cecilia Yephi Thwala from the EFF, Bonginkosi Khulekani Mbuyazi from the IFP and Mishack Veli Zwane from the Zulu Royal Property. 

The ward was previously represented by the IFP and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s resignation. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 municipal elections was 70.17% and the IFP candidate won the ward with 55.95% of valid votes.

In Limpopo: 

Ward 5 in the Fetakgomo Tubatse Municipality – LIM476 will be contested by Motlabaile Bennet Lewele from the ANC, Hlagudi Solomon Ramogayana from the Azanian People's Organisation (AZP), Podika Simon Mokwena from the EFF, Excellent Hlabishi Mhlala from the Pan Africanist Congress Of Azania, Norman Dogfather Segogoba from the Socialist Agenda Of Dispossessed Africans and Morotola Damaris Maluleke  from the South African Maintenance And Estate Beneficiaries Association. 

The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s death. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 municipal elections was 46.21% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 72.09% of valid votes.
