Candidates contesting Municipal By-Elections on 9 October 2019

Three (3) municipal ward by-elections will take place in Limpopo and Mpumalanga provinces on Wednesday, 9 October 2019.

The by-elections will be contested by eleven (11) candidates from four (4) political parties, and one (1) independent candidate.  

The details of the by-elections are as follows:

In Limpopo:

• Ward 13 in Lepele-Nkumpi Municipality – LIM355 will be contested by three (3) candidates, namely Madimetja Obed Maruma, an independent candidate; Sello Donald Phoshoko from the African National Congress (ANC); and Lesetse Enos Mankwe from the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF).

The ward, with 4 379 registered voters, was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor.  The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 59.82% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 56.47% of valid votes.

In Mpumalanga:

• Ward 28 in Govan Mbeki Municipality – MP307 will be contested by four (4) candidates, namely Mabhiyane Andries Sipela from the ANC, Terry-Lee Kleynhans from the Democratic Alliance (DA), Rosy Thokozile Mabizela from the EFF, and Michelle Rademeyer from the Vryheidsfront Plus (FF+).

The ward, with 5 770 registered voters, was previously represented by the DA and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s resignation. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 60.85% and the DA candidate won the ward with 45.01% of valid votes.

• Ward 12 in Thaba Chweu Municipality – MP321 will be contested by four (4) candidates, namely Gareth Orin Tomur from the ANC, Spiridon Couvaras from the DA, Maputana Christopher Mmadi from the EFF, and Gertruida Dorothea Susanna Venter from the FF+.

The ward, with 4 015 registered voters, was previously represented by the DA and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s resignation. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 68.09% and the DA candidate won the ward with 79.06% of valid votes.
