Candidates participating in the municipal by-elections taking place on 5 November 2014

Municipal ward by-elections will take place in the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, North West and the Western Cape on Wednesday, 5 November 2014. 

A total of 12 wards will be contested by 31 candidates, representing eight (8) political parties and three (3) independent candidates. Three (3) wards are uncontested.

Four (4) by-elections are scheduled to take place in the Eastern Cape one of which is uncontested:
•  Ward 4 in Mbhashe [Idutywa] Municipality – EC121 will be contested by Siphiwo Davidson Kalityi of the African National Congress; and Xolani Wiseman Dyantyi of the United Democratic Movement. The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor. The voter turnout for this ward in the by-elections of 29 January 2014 was 57.86%.

•  Ward 19 in Nkonkobe [Alice] Municipality – EC127 is uncontested. Liziwe Faith Matyolo of the African National Congress is the only candidate. The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2011 municipal elections was 59.53%.
•  Ward 42 in Nelson Mandela Bay [Port Elizabeth] Municipality – NMA will be contested by Andile Phillip Gqabi, an independent candidate; Mazwanzima Mini of the African National Congress; Mzwandile Stanley Hote of the Congress of the People; Nomakazi Cobo of the Democratic Alliance; and Odwa Galada of the United Democratic Movement. The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant as a result of the termination of the membership of the councillor by the party. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2011 municipal elections was 67.49%.
•  Ward 46 in Nelson Mandela Bay [Port Elizabeth] Municipality – NMA will be contested by Lindelwa Priscilla Qukubana of the African National Congress; Khuselwa Cynthia Ngxoweni of the Congress of the People; Alvezo Fortuin of the Democratic Alliance; and Nomazizi Joyce Jama of the United Democratic Movement. The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2011 municipal elections was 60.37%.

Two (2) by-elections will take place in KwaZulu-Natal:
•  Ward 12 in Umzumbe [Umzumbe] Municipality – KZN213 will be contested by Phiwokuhle Zamisa of the African National Congress; Paulos Philani Shezi of the Inkatha Freedom Party; and Sizan Raphael Biyase of the National Freedom Party. The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2011 municipal elections was 60.64%.
•  Ward 16 in Newcastle [Newcastle] Municipality – KZN252 will be contested by David Ngwenya of the African National Congress; Nhlanhla Wilfred Mokoena of the Inkatha Freedom Party and Carol Sibongakonke Mdluli of the National Freedom Party. The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2011 municipal elections was 62.33%.

Two (2) by-elections will take place in Limpopo:
•  Ward 29 in Thulamela [Thohoyandou] Municipality – LIM343 will be contested by Azwifarwi Justice Ratshibvumo and Rudzani Edward Mmbulaheni, both independent candidates; Mafela Patrick Ramashia of the African National Congress; and Thizwikoni John Nenungwi of the Congress of the People. The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2011 municipal elections was 48.97%.
•  Ward 3 in the Bela-Bela [Warmbad] Municipality – LIM366 will be contested by Lerato Rachael Mpete of the African National Congress; and Mmasamoele Elizabeth Ledwaba of the Congress of the People. The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant as a result of the resignation of the councillor. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2011 municipal elections was 56.03%.

One (1) by-election will take place in Mpumalanga:
•  Ward 8 in Dr JS Moroka [Mdutjana] Municipality – MP316 will be contested by Jacob Mziwakhe Mtsweni of the African National Congress; Sunnyboy Winny Mahlangu of the Pan Africanist Congress of Azania; and Zabe Jack Jiyane of the Sindawonye Progressive Party. The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2011 municipal elections was 58.62%.

One (1) by-election which was scheduled to take place in North West is uncontested:
•  Ward 19 in Moses Kotane [Mogwase] Municipality – NW375 is uncontested. Harry Kgothatso Kodongo of the African National Congress is the only candidate. The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant as a result of the resignation of the councillor. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2011 municipal elections was 54.25%.

Two (2) by-elections are scheduled to take place in the Western Cape one of which is uncontested:
•  Ward 23 in City of Cape Town [Cape Town] Municipality – CPT will be contested by Hendrik Sackson of the African National Congress; and Nora Edna Grose of the Democratic Alliance. The ward was previously represented by the Democratic Alliance and became vacant as a result of the termination of the councillor’s membership by the party. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2011 municipal elections was 72.00%.
•  Ward 16 in Drakenstein [Paarl] Municipality – WC023 is uncontested. Bongiwe Primrose Duba of the African National Congress is the only candidate. The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant as a result of the resignation of the councillor. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2011 municipal elections was 60.88%.

Voting stations will be open from 07h00 to 21h00. A total of 76 582 voters are registered in the 61 voting districts where by-elections will be taking place.
