Public hearings on Political Party Funding Act Regulations to continue tomorrow

The Electoral Commission wishes to thank all the participants and attendees at today’s public hearings into the draft regulations for the Political Party Funding Act (Act 6 of 2018).

The Commission welcomes the spirit of constructive participation which characterized the engagements during the day and looks forward to the continued process of engagement tomorrow.

Beyond the specific recommendations made, a key theme which emerged during the day was overwhelming support for the legislation and regulations and the need to implement these as soon as possible.

Among the organisations which made submissions today included the Council for the Advancement of the South African Constitution, My Vote Counts, Amandla.mobi, amaBhungane Centre for Investigative Journalism, Media Monitoring South Africa, the Congress of South African Trade Unions and the Democratic Alliance.

Organisations and individuals scheduled to make submissions tomorrow include the former Minister of Constitutional Affairs Mr Valli Moosa, Business Unity South Africa, the Economic Freedom Fighters, the Forum for Service Delivery, Business Leadership South Africa, the Information Regulator, the African National Congress, Right 2 Know and the Inkatha Freedom Party. Proceedings will resume at 09h00 tomorrow at the Taj Hotel in Cape Town.

The Electoral Commission will study the specifics of each submission in due course as part of the process to finalise the regulations.

As part of the on-going public engagement process written submissions received will be made available via the Electoral Commission website (www.elections.org.za) as soon as possible.
