Results of the Municipal By-Elections held On 3 October 2018

During the by-elections contested yesterday in the KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga provinces, the African National Congress (ANC) won one seat and retained one seat, the Democratic Alliance (DA) retained one seat, and the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) retained one seat. 

The new councillors for the ANC are:

• Previn Asoka Vedan in Ward 71 in Ethekwini – ETH. The party gained the seat that was previously won by the DA in the 2016 Municipal Elections, with 45.70% of the votes cast compared to 62.33% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 31.11%.

• Patrick Vusumuzi Malinga in Ward 25 the Steve Tshwete Municipality – MP313. The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, with 69.54% of the votes cast compared to 79.17% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 34.29%. 

The new councillor for the DA is:

• Henning Petrus Cornelius De Wet in Ward 3 in Umhlathuze Municipality – KZN282. The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, with 67.84% of the votes cast compared to 63.49% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 26.64%. 

The new councillor for the IFP is:

• Zipho Mthembeni Ndlovu in Ward 3 in Mthonjaneni Municipality – KZN285.  The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, with 63.63% of the votes cast compared to 55.90% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 46.07%.
