Results of the Municipal By-Elections held on 01 February 2017

Centurion - The African National Congress won all four wards in the by-elections contested yesterday in the Eastern Cape, Free State and Western Cape provinces.

The results saw the party retaining three wards it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections and winning award previously held by the Democratic Alliance in the George Municipality in the Western Cape. 

Voter turnout varied in the by-elections between 45.13% and 67.28% with an average of 54.00%. 

The new councillors for the African National Congress are:
• Albert Phumle Mkonto in Ward 3 in the uMzimvubu Municipality – EC442.  The seat was retained by the party with 79.93% of the 1 469 votes cast.  Voter turnout was 45.13%. 
• Lebohang Andries Makhefu in Ward 12 in the Metsimaholo Municipality – FS204.  The seat was retained by the party with 31.34% of the 1 588 votes cast. Voter turnout was 52.01%.
• Cokiswa Iris Lesele in Ward 11 in the George Municipality – WC044.  The party won the seat with 48.14% of the 2 184 votes cast.  Voter turnout was 49.64%
• Jarques Denvar Esau in Ward 25 in the George Municipality – WC044.  The seat was retained by the party with 55.34% of the 2 739 votes cast.  Voter turnout was 67.28%.
