Results of the Municipal By-Elections held on 13 February 2019

During the by-elections contested yesterday in the Northern and Western Cape provinces, an independent won one seat and the African National Congress (ANC) retained six seats, won one seat and lost one seat and the Democratic Alliance (DA) retained its seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections.

The new independent councillor is:

• Boitumelo Joel Stout in Ward 16 in Sol Plaatjie Municipality – NC091. The independent won the seat over the ANC from the 2016 Municipal Elections, with 47.08% of the votes cast compared to 85.64% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 52.59%.

The new ANC councillors are:

• Dolly Mosetsanagape Swazi in Ward 9 in Sol Plaatjie Municipality – NC091. The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, with 66.90% of the votes cast compared to 75.40% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 38.58%.
• Itumeleng Moses Mojakwe in Ward 11 in Sol Plaatjie Municipality – NC091. The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, with 66.33% of the votes cast compared to 80.91% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 38.78%.
• Lesedi Lawrence Mocwagole in Ward 12 in Sol Plaatjie Municipality – NC091. The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, with 64.91% of the votes cast compared to 81.61% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 43.40%.
• Margaret Kereditse Molatudi in Ward 13 in Sol Plaatjie Municipality – NC091. The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, with 69.55% of the votes cast compared to 77.07% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 40.44%.
• Itumeleng Abednego Lekoma in Ward 19 in Sol Plaatjie Municipality – NC091. The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, with 68.89% of the votes cast compared to 83.69% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 45.67%.
• Frikkie Banda in Ward 32 in Sol Plaatjie Municipality – NC091. The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, with 55.07% of the votes cast compared to 76.32% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 52.06%.
• Sithembele Sidwell Ngqezu in Ward 4 in Knsyna Municipality – WC048. The party won the seat over an independent from the 2016 Municipal Elections, with 63.18% of the votes cast compared to 49.27% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 43.51%.

The new DA councillor is:

• Nicola Jowell in Ward 54 in the City of Cape Town Municipality – CPT. The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, with 88.63% of the votes cast compared to 93.91%in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 25.35%.
