Results of the Municipal By-Elections held on 20 September 2017

During the by-elections contested yesterday in Gauteng, the Northern Cape and the Western Cape, both the African National Congress (ANC) and the Democratic Alliance (DA) retained the seats they won during the 2016 Municipal Elections.

The new councillor for the ANC is:
Luyanda Nyingwa in Ward 37 in the City of Cape Town – CTP. The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, however with a reduced margin of 70.88% of the votes cast compared to 76.74% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 38.19%. 

The new councillors for the DA are:
Lesley Theresa Holden Visser in Ward 7 in the Midvaal Municipality – GT422. The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, increasing its margin to 77.14% of the votes cast compared to 76.59% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 37.10%. 
Hendrik Johannes Fourie in Ward 7 in the Gamagara Municipality – NC453. The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, increasing its margin to 57.35% of the votes cast compared to 46.30% in the 2016 Municipal Elections.  Voter turnout yesterday was 61.23%.
