During the by-elections contested yesterday in the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and the Northern Cape provinces, both the African National Congress (ANC) and the Democratic Alliance (DA) retained their seats.
The new councillors for the ANC are:
• Maccord Tobo in Ward 26 in Mbizana Municipality – EC443. The party retained the seat it won during the by-elections held on 9 November 2016, however with a reduced margin of 73.61% of the votes cast compared to 79.80%. Voter turnout yesterday was 43.06%.
• Benedictus Benjamin Josop in Ward 1 in the Khâi-Ma Municipality – NC067. The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, however with a reduced margin of 63.31% of the votes cast compared to 64.57% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 60.98%.
The new councillor for the DA is:
• Pamela Anne Passmoor in Ward 7 in the Umngeni Municipality – KZN222. The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, with an increased margin of 83.41% of the votes cast compared to 80.46%. Voter turnout yesterday was 52.20%.
