Results of the Municipal By-Elections held on 6 November 2019

During the by-elections contested yesterday in the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal, the African National Congress (ANC) retained five (5) seats and the DA retained two (2) seats gained in the 2016 Municipal Elections. 

The five (5) new ANC councillors are:

• Bulela Benson Ntabeni in Ward 03 in the Ngqushwa Municipality – EC126. The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, with 94.93% of the votes cast compared to 94.48% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 43.62%.
• Noxolo Tshalana in Ward 22 in the Umzimvubu Municipality – EC442. The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, with 96.61% of the votes cast compared to 76.15% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 32.23%.
• Nokulunga Perceviarance Khumalo in Ward 06 in the Umzumbe Municipality – KZN213. The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, with 60.74% of the votes cast compared to 89.23% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 51.39%.
• Bongani Fortune Madlala in Ward 04 in the Mpofana Municipality – KZN223. The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, with 40.08% of the votes cast compared to 53.29% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 51.35%.
• Ntobeko Zulu in Ward 18 in the Kwadukuza Municipality – KZN292. The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, with 57.53% of the votes cast compared to 59.18% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 53.24%.

The two (2) new DA councillors are:

• Jonathan Malvin Martin in Ward 02 in the Blue Crane Route Municipality – EC102. The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, with 53.45% of the votes cast compared to 59.09% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 55.29%.
• Suraya Reddy in Ward 33 in the Msunduzi Municipality – KZN225. The party retained the seat it won in the 2 August 2017 by-elections, with 46.96% of the votes cast compared to 47.69% in that by-election. Voter turnout yesterday was 24.05%.
