Results of the municipal by-elections held on 2 April 2014

The Electoral Commission (IEC) hereby announces the results of the municipal by-elections held in the Eastern Cape, Free State, Limpopo, Mpumalanga and North West on Wednesday, 2 April 2014.

The African National Congress won five of the nine wards contested. The remaining four went to the Democratic Alliance.

Voter turnout varied between 24.26% and 45.15% with an average of 33.09%.

Three (3) by-elections took place in the Eastern Cape. The new councillors are:
•  Marion Mackley of the Democratic Alliance in Ward 4, Buffalo City Metropolitan [East London] Municipality – BUF. The seat was retained by the party.
•  Robert Herold Wylde of the Democratic Alliance in Ward 1, Nelson Mandela Bay [Port Elizabeth] Municipality – NMA. The seat was retained by the party.
•  Unathi Menemene of the African National Congress in Ward 56, Nelson Mandela Bay [Port Elizabeth] Municipality – NMA. The seat was retained by the party.

Two (2) by-elections took place in the Free State. The new councillors are:
•  Dineo Grace Semela of the African National Congress in Ward 20, Maluti a Phofung [Qwa-Qwa] Municipality – FS194. The seat was retained by the party.
•  Johannes Christiaan Roos of the Democratic Alliance in Ward 13, Ngwathe [Parys] Municipality – FS203. The seat was retained by the party.

One (1) by-election each took place in Limpopo and Mpumalanga. The new councillors are:
•  Mamodupi Esther Nkadimeng of the African National Congress in Ward 10, Makhuduthamaga [Ngwaritsi] Municipality – LIM473, Limpopo. The seat was retained by the party; and
•  Trevor Robert Langeveld of the Democratic Alliance in Ward 15, Steve Tshwete [Middelburg] Municipality – MP313, Mpumalanga. The seat was retained by the party.

One (1) by-election took place in North West while the second one was uncontested. The new councillors are:
•  Kgomotso Comfort Seheri of the African National Congress in Ward 13, Mafikeng [Mahikeng] Municipality – NW383. The ward was uncontested. The seat was retained by the party.
•  Tironyane Bruce Makolomakwa of the African National Congress in Ward 15, Mafikeng [Mahikeng] Municipality – NW383. The seat was retained by the party.
