Wards to be contested in the municipal by-elections of 2 April 2014

Municipal ward by-elections will take place in the Eastern Cape, Free State, Limpopo, Mpumalanga and North West on Wednesday, 2 April 2014.

A total of nine (9) wards will be contested. Voting will take place in 35 voting districts in the following wards:

Eastern Cape:
• Ward 4 in Buffalo City Metropolitan [East London] Municipality – BUF with 8 515 registered voters. The ward was previously represented by the Democratic Alliance and became vacant as a result of the resignation of the councillor.
• Ward 1 in Nelson Mandela Bay [Port Elizabeth] Municipality – NMA with 12 188 registered voters. The ward was previously represented by the Democratic Alliance and became vacant as a result of the termination of the councillor’s membership of the party.
• Ward 56 in Nelson Mandela Bay [Port Elizabeth] Municipality – NMA with 11 978 registered voters. The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor.

Free State:
• Ward 20 in Maluti a Phofung [Qwa-Qwa] Municipality – FS194 with 4 400 registered voters. The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor.
• Ward 13 in Ngwathe [Parys] Municipality – FS203 with 3 586 registered voters. The ward was previously represented by the Democratic Alliance and became vacant as a result of the resignation of the councillor.

Limpopo:
• Ward 10 in Makhuduthamaga [Ngwaritsi] Municipality – LIM473 with 4 120 registered voters. The ward was previously represented by the Congress of the People and became vacant as a result of the resignation of the councillor.

Mpumalanga:
• Ward 15 in Steve Tshwete [Middelburg] Municipality – MP313 with 4 607 registered voters. The ward was previously represented by the Democratic Alliance and became vacant as a result of the resignation of the councillor.

North West:
• Ward 13 in Mafikeng [Mahikeng] Municipality – NW383 with 5 233 registered voters. The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor.
• Ward 15 in Mafikeng [Mahikeng] Municipality – NW383 with 3 799 registered voters. The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor.

ELECTION TIMETABLE FOR ALL MUNICIPAL BY-ELECTIONS CALLED ON OR BEFORE 28 FEBRUARY 2014 TO BE HELD ON 2 APRIL 2014

The cut-off dates for the various electoral processes for these by-elections are as follows:
28 February: Notice calling the by-election
6 March: Certification of the voters’ roll and making certified segments available for inspection
6 March: Notices: List of and particulars pertaining to voting stations and mobile voting stations
10 March at 17h00: Cut-off date and time for submission of nomination of candidates
11 March: Notify party/independent nominator of non-compliance of outstanding candidate documents
14 March at 17h00: Cut-off date and time for party/independent to submit outstanding ward candidate documents
17 March:  Opening of applications for special votes
17 March: Compilation and certification of lists of candidates contesting a ward
17 March: Issue certificates to candidates
24 March: Closing of applications for special votes
1 April: Special votes at voting stations and special vote home visits – 08h00 to 17h00
2 April: By-election date
