The Electoral Court has ordered the Electoral Commission (IEC) to request the MEC for Local Government in North West to postpone the by-elections that was scheduled for tomorrow in Wards 1, 4, 11, 12 and 20, Tlokwe [Potchefstroom] Municipality – NW402, North West.
The by-election in ward 13 was postponed after agreement between counsel.
In terms of the court order the applicants must be allowed to register as candidates in their respective wards in the postponed by-elections.
The Electoral Commission was also ordered to lodge an investigation into the conduct of one of its officials for the period between 8 August 2013 and 27 August 2013 pertaining to the registration of the applicants as candidates for the ward by-elections.
The immediate implication of this order is that by-elections in the above mentioned wards will no longer proceed on Wednesday, 18 September 2013 as scheduled. The Commission will advise on further arrangements for the filling of these vacancies.
It is brought to the attention of voters registered in these wards that no voting will take place on Wednesday, 18 September 2013 at the following voting stations:
